This too shall pass

Several years ago, before I had any kids, we had a visit from friend and commenter bearing and her husband who already had kids. The visiting dad noticed the giant grated air intake vent in our living room and said "You should screen this because kids are going to throw stuff down there."

We didn't do it. Our first child was a girl, and she never put anything down there. She also didn't press buttons on the stereo or the oven or bash on the glass fronted bookcases - at least she didn't do it more than once. Seriously, after we said no, she stopped. Along came this boy child, and he loves to press buttons no matter how many times we say no. He bashes on the tv and bookcases again and again. We have actually had to put up a gate to keep him away from the scary basement stairs.

A few days ago, Z screamed like she was being eaten by a monster. Q had opened Chutes and Ladders, extracted one of the pieces and dropped it down the air intake vent. Upon investigation, J discovered a bunch of other stuff down there (including a pacifier left from the last baby who lived in this house before we bought it in 2003) and fished it all out. He didn't screen it though. A couple of days ago we extracted a book. Last night it was half of the alphabet links. Today J has resolved to install a screen.

It only took 5 years, but the prediction has come true.

Just have to say, having 2 girls that one girl (Gretta) was like Q and the other, like Z. Nice to have one of each to keep you on your toes.

K's a little Q over this direction. I have to babyproof way more with him than I did with R.
